Say ,John .I was in beautiful Ouray yesterday ,taking in the hot springs' medicinal waters . I beg to disagree with my friend Herb about the #454.OLd timers said she steamed poorly ,like many class K-27s .CLass C-18s were not considered good steamers either . In fact, the former master mechanic of the F&CC recommendended against the D&RG purchasing them . The D&RG was able to remedy their poor steaming qualities somewhat ,but another problem cropped up with the class .Because of the lap-seam boiler(other C-class engines had new boilers rolled with butt-seams between 1912 and 1916), the pressure on on some or all of the class was only 145 psi, which limited them to light trains or water level grades . Hence, the C-18 class was seen a lot running out of Montrose to Ouray .
