I have learned a lot in this thread.....our 473 stuff is indeed 1950 not 1951 cause the engine had a plow in 1951 when it went swimming. Also its cool to have shots of it in the bumblebee paint in 1950. Also having a couple scenes of 345 in Durango switching is neat, circa 1950. In 1949 the guy was was there and caught 315 switching and 453 was his power to Silverton. I have a still that shows 3 engines parked for the night in Durango and in the middle is 485(the only K-36 to be scrapped), and 315 is on one end of it, plus another freight engine on the other side of 485. I always find it very encouraging finding some of this old stuff on film, that is very elusive.
It may not be on still photos, but some of the stuff of the 40's and 50's is rare on film. What I notice though is much of the late 40's and early 50's material tends to be riding. Not as many highway travelers in those days, so they took the train to get there, then just rode the trains around. Of course you had the NG circle back then as well! Cool to learn 268 was used in the movie, just not in the wreck of course. Also I have some footage that includes some of the Chicago Railfair and 268 operating there, as Jerry described.
