On the last day of filming, July 23, 1951, 268 was given a temporary maroon paint job, renumbered 116, and lettered for Santa Fe railroad’s never built “Canon City and San Juan” subsidiary. The valley line was gone by then. The 268 was taken to Alamosa and then via standard gauge to Salida. She was returned to freight service out of Gunnison
The world premiere of “Denver and Rio Grande” was held simultaneously in Denver and Durango on May 2, 1952. A special train carrying stars and publicity people on a five day tour Denver to SLC Engine 268 was brought from Gunnison, fitted with 473’s diamond stack and steamed up on two lengths of rail laid in a downtown Denver siding.
After the movie premiere events wound down, 268 was moved to back Salida where the 473 diamond stack was removed. On May 28, she arrived back in Gunnison ready for freight duty but still wearing the gaudy brass bands and paint scheme from the movie.
I have a C16 book about 75% complete but likely will never finish it.
