Last I heard there was a San Juan County Sheriff at the intersection to remind everybody of the closure. Its all handled professionally & politely but they are serious about keeping nonlocals out.
The people who got the tickets were on a closed county road up Mineral Creek. The barricades & traffic cones had been thrown into the willows so things went less politely. Not hauled off to the local jail (which is the LaPlata County Correction Center in Durango) but tickets were issued. San Juan County has closed off all the federal back country such as Molas Pass & Andrews Lake. Maybe unlawfully but not worth the hassle. Maybe part of Mesa Verde is open but I'm not certain.
I hate to sound negative but I think the general feeling in Durango is that we have enough problems without worrying about outsiders. The county directly south of LaPlata County is being hit very hard with huge losses among the Navajos which adds to our general distrust of outsiders.
Just yesterday a mandatory mask rule was imposed on Durango and another such rule on the entire state of New Mexico so bring your masks. If you have a "problem" about wearing a mask please come back next year. Even without the law the social pressure to wear a mask is considerable.
Beyond that welcome to Durango, Have fun spend money but kindly do not infect us!
