Quite a long train, Earl - but on a Saturday at the peak of Fall Colors not terribly surprising. Was that the longest train on the C&TS during 1996?

Actually, I think that solves one mystery, Earl -
After chasing the double-header on the morning of 09/21, Brad, Jarret and I went west to Durango. They headed home to SoCal and I bummed around Silverton, Ouray, Lake City and Gunnison with Roger Callender of the RMRRC for a couple of days. Although I don't remember it specifically, I might have headed back to Antonito from Gunnison, chasing #497 west on 09/
26 before heading home to SoCal, and – if so – then that IS Tom and not you in the cab of #497, above.
Added 04/13/20: Another possibility is that, since #497 pulled #2-#4 eastbound on Sept. 14, she would have pulled #1-#3 westbound on either 09/15 or 09/16 in order to be back in Chama for the two-engine Chama to Big Horn charter on Sept. 17, so most likely the above photos of her at the trestle and water tower were taken on the 15th or maybe the 16th, NOT the 26th. Actually, the more I think about this the more likely it seems, as I distinctly remember spending the night of 09/14 at a really bare-bones long-gone motel roughly across the road from the depot in Antonito
. . .
(And now I have a bunch of large .tif scans and small .jgp web copies to rename from 960916-nn, '17-nn, '19-nn and '22-nn to 960914-nn, '15-nn, '17-nn and '15/'16/'26-nn — something to keep me out of mischief for an hour or so during our six-to-twelve-week "Shelter-in--Place" lock-down. Of course I should have plenty of time to dig out all my 6×7 slides & negs from 1996 and re-scan them on the Nikon.)
