. . .
Well, we have a date problem here. On 9/19/96 we didn't run an extra train. We NEVER ran specials on weekends during the stock rush, and was real reluctant to do so during the week.
On 9/19/96 I did run 463, but it was on a helper turn. I helped 488 with 10 cars, 274 tons up the hill. Later that same day I took 463 out on some sort of rescue mission to save 487, which was coming west from Antonito. I left town with 4 cars, 117 tons. No more notes about what it was all about, but I didn't get home until 1030pm.
I will agree with your shots of 9/22/96. Another eventful day...
Sun Sept 22, 1996
In 900am
Helper Turn
497 - Yates
487 road - Atkinson
17 cars, 406 tons.
After we cut off at Cumbres, we turned and waited for the trains to get to Osier and radio in that all was well. However, 488 had a hot driving box that needed attention before it could continue. So, Mark Yates and I spun the 497 back around and highballed for Osier where we turned on the loop and pinch-hit for 488 on #3's return.
To add to our joys, the brake rigging on boxcar/snack car 451 came apart at Cumbres. The brake beam fell on the rail and the car behind it (512) derailed. We then had a rerailing project to do.
Train #3 finally staggered into Chama at 640pm.
Tied Up 730pm.
10 1/2 hrs.
