Kelly's campground was just north of Chama as you go out of town. There is a bend in the highway to the right and then you cross the railroad tracks. But before you do cross the tracks, near the bend in the road was a turn off to the left. The campground was down there near the river to the west of the Railroad. I think the place was named after the Kelly that owned the Cafe in town at one time. Not sure. As I recall it was free. It didn't have a whole lot except some picnic tables, and places to park for campers. I do not think there was electric and no running water for toilets. I believe there was an outhouse, and maybe some water for campers from a pump or faucet. We took two explorer tents from our Boy Scout days, and it was fine for the 4 of us. It was pretty spartan, but we were young and stupid back then. One night something growled awhile outside our tent, but nobody wanted to check it out!!! Not sure when it closed. We might have stayed there in 1968, I do not remember cause it was a family trip and my dad was in charge!!! We had the truck camper. All I remember was eating breakfast at Kelly's cafe in the morning, and some of the RR crew were there as well. Dad got the scoop on the train plans for the day.
