I was out there twice in 1971, the first time being in June, and the second time around Labor Day. They were running Antonito-Sublette as I recall. Also one day we rode the train between Chama and Cumbres. That was my first time really experiencing the line and the hard working engine while riding the train. My other ride was when I was 5 or so!!!
Anyway I remember my 3 traveling companions and I each paid $5.00. Well worth that, eh! Even if the sky was overcast!!!
I was thinking the trains went to Sublette versus Big Horn, cause they could take water there. I also seem to recall two trips to either Sublette or Big Horn in one day!
Could be I am wrong though!
I think I mentioned this before that I was 20 in 71, and 4 of us guys borrowed our family's 2nd car, a 1966 Ford Galaxi, and rented an open U-Haul trailer. We loaded up a Honda 305 Scrambler, and Honda 350 plus tents for camping and other stuff and headed for Colorado. We are just east of Cincinnati, and with 4 drivers we drove straight through in less than 24 hours. Camped at Kelly's campground(Near the first crossing off 17---its now gone) for FREE, then stayed at the Y motel one night for a shower, etc. Then off to Durango and stayed at the KOA east of town for a few nights. There were gas wars that year, and we got gas for between 19 cents and 24 cents the whole trip. There was signs along I-70 which were something like "Gas War exit??? 19 cents". We were gone two weeks, and I spent a grand total of $100.00 on the entire trip. Amazing really! Was a poor college student so had to watch the pennies, but got to enjoy a lot of steam!!!
