Re: Ongoing Work on C&S Caboose 1006 - Part 5

A huge thank you to the Roundhouse Staff and volunteers at the Colorado Railroad Museum (Jeff Taylor, Dusty Thompson, Norm Acker, Bob Graham) for allowing us to use their wood shop!!! We are currently in the process of making the last new wood components for 1006's new frame. These include new Draft Gear Beams for the B End (brakewheel end), new Deadblocks (aka Deadwoods), and mounting board for the brake cylinder. All of these items are being made of white oak, as they were on the original frame.

Due to the size of the timber, the hardness of the material (white oak), and available tools, we had to make a circular saw cut on each side, and finish with a Sawzall to cut the remaining material in the center.

This has been one of the coolest pieces of history we have discovered to date - a section of a January 1914 calendar page recovered from between the interior cabinetry and caboose floor. Caboose 1006 last had major work, including a new floor, performed in October of 1914. This piece of paper was sandwiched inside the caboose until we discovered it in May of 2019. This paper has been carefully placed in a photo frame, and will be placed inside the caboose when finished.
