Kelly, I remember another little trip we took with my dad around 1960 or so, where he went to look at a couple of gravel company switchers. As I recall(no photos for some reason), the owner had 2 engines and they were either 0-6-0, 2-8-0 or something similar. The price of $8,000 sticks in my mind, and I remember dad telling us the price seemed a bit high. I think they had been replaced by diesels, but don't recall the details, as I was very young back then. My dad once went to Altoona I think it was to look at some ex Pennsy twin Diners. He told the local Rotary club(He was a member), about them, and thinking they would make a great meeting place. There were two sets, and he got a price of $8,000 for one set of 2, and the other was similar. By the time the Rotary club decided to do the deal, Conrail or Amtrak decided to place them back in service!!!!! That was the closest my dad ever got to buying any RR equipment. I sure saw my share of dead steamers coming through here on the N&W headed for scrap on the west side of Cincinnati!!!
One crew let me climb inside a Y-3 2-8-8-2 and ring the bell (yes it was still on it as was all the other jewelry). Some of those numbers plates would have been nice to have had
dad wanted to spend the money back then. He was more into seeing LIVE steam engines at work than collecting souvenirs.
