I respectfully disagree, Joe and Chris. We have done several rebuilds of RR equipment for company use in the past few years. Attached are a few pictures of these. Also, there is Uintah/D&RGW water car 0470. And there will be more projects to come.
For what it's worth, these are my opinions and not that of my employer:
Nobody is perfect, and everybody makes mistakes over time. I know I have. But we try to learn and do better with each project. Attempting to be strictly "historic" is a losing battle, when the railroad carries modern-day passengers who will not tolerate the "historic" inconveniences of days past. And they have a right to be both comfortable and safe while riding the rails. We can't have dry hopper toilets, water coolers with paper cups, coal stoves for heat, kerosene lamps, etc. and meet the expectations and needs of the majority of our customers over a 90-mile mountain journey. That is the reality, like it or not. Yet the essence of the railroad is still the same, both in its appearance and its culture and function. So overall, I'm proud to be a part of what we do.
Even if a few people enjoy nitpicking. Opinions are great. But I don't see a need to be rancorous or nasty about it, either in person or in the tone or words we use on the Internet. We just have to keep it all in a healthy perspective.
I will get off my soapbox now. Perhaps we can all share a cool beverage some time and laugh over our differences of opinions. Have a great day.
