Always may be a strong word, but you can't argue with what you see in Jerry's pics. And what they do without any support from their community, even open hostility. All the steps the D&S has taken under both Bradshaw and now Harper should be applauded, but seldom are by many contributors here.
The concessions they have to make for the locals who prosper from the railroad's presence are ridiculous. Last I checked they have to put wood pellets in the engines at night because the neighbors complained (unless this has changed), they switch with diesels because of public complaints, etc. I'm sure I'm missing things.
Then there is all they have done to keep it running. The roundhouse, the car shops, the work on the coaches over the years. Restoring 481, 480, 497, 482, 486, 476, and now 493. There are a lot of things they do that go unnoticed. Coaches 630, 213, etc that were built by the D&S look like they match the 1880 era cars. I never like those flat topped coaches on the C&TS, but I think that Crazy Woman Creek coach looks beautiful. I am looking forward to what they are going to do to the p-boxes they have now.
I don't think they are perfect, but they are successful, which keeps that railroad running. If they are not successful, it becomes a bike trail through a wilderness area.
