From Johnny Graybeal's "Along the ET&WNC" vol 2:
The building of the ALCAN Highway was considered crucial for the war effort and required more locos than the WP&Y had. The government took over the WP and rounded up locos from other places, including the two from the ET&WNC. THey were their best locos and had just been shopped. There is no record of payment and the locos were written off the books for their purchase price.
They left May 30, 1942 and were unloaded in July. They then went in for more modifications like moving the cab back, insulating the smokebox and adding a plow. They went into service in October. The first tender lettering showed WP&Y. LAter this was simply "USA". Both 10 and 14 were destroyed in a fire on Christmas day, 1943. I was all of 5 weeks old when that happened.
