I’ve always loved USA narrow gauge, but discovered Wales about 10 years ago. A visit to the 2’ gauge Ffestiniog Railway, the worldwide birthplace of narrow gauge, is a must for any fan’s bucket list. They have three of their 1860s locomotives, and everything up to new-build double and single Fairlies, with a new one underway. The adjacent Welsh Highland Rly has been magnificently reborn, featuring South African super power, and is a venue for the FR engines to stretch their legs. Add to that the rebuilding of the Lynton & Barnstable, with new builds of two of their historic engines, plus a lot of the old 2’ quarry engines now under steam, and it’s a narrow gauge cornucopia.
Therefore, it’s really amazing to see what’s happening on this side of the pond. Quickly closing ground on the UK successes. In addition to the amazing happenings in Colorado plus California’s SP#18, there’s of course the resurrection of #9 on the WW&F, with a new build being planned as well, and in Colorado the new build #36 in Ridgway. The only slight disappointment is that C&S #’s 71 & 9 are no longer operating, but never say never as the saying goes.
