Those US accomplishments are truly wonderful, but they pale in comparison to the UK, where 213 of 297 hopeless wrecks of locomotives were saved from the Barry scrapyard. Of those, over half were returned to operation, some now in their third overhaul. Only a handful of them do not have active restoration projects ongoing. Couple this with roughly a dozen replica projects that have moved from paper to frames, wheels, cabs, smokeboxes and tenders, with a few (some narrow gauge) completed. Here in North America, we can't even erect shelters over the sad, rusting derelicts in city parks to give them some protection from the elements, that will lead to their eventual demise over time, when city officials declare them "too far gone" to be saved.
