Thanks for sharing your adventure, Evan! It sounds like you had a great trip! I had a chance to visit in 2016, and took the train from Poroy to Aguas Calientes. An excellent narrow gauge excursion.

I'm really glad you noticed the Incan walls along the Urubamba River. Look at any photo of the Sacred Valley and the towns in it - they have been there for many hundreds of years, yet they do not flood and the river does not wander. Why? Because the Incas specifically engineered the river into it's current location. Pretty fantastic. Did you also notice how all of the Spanish-era structures are built upon 4-5 feet of Inca wall?

Did you have a chance to hike either Montana Machu Picchu or Huanya Picchu? Apologies for getting off topic - I really find Peru to be a fascinating and fun place to visit.
