I can't speak much to the condition of the 2 in Antonito, but the 493 was in fairly good condition upon inspection in Silverton- enough that I'd venture she was better than 494 or 495. While there was some trouble with getting frozen/rusted bolts loose, the motion came apart completely in about an hour. We were prepared to repack all the cellars, but after dropping a couple it was decided that she'd be loose enough to make it to Durango without new grease.
Journal box repacks went about as they would on any car/engine in normal service, and the bit of boiler survey I took part in (Mark, you probably remember better than I), looked very clean. A couple concern spots here and there, but nothing beyond repair (Obviously, otherwise it wouldn't be getting ready to go
). On a cursory glance a couple years back, I could see that both the 494 and 495 had some firebox welds that needed to be seen to before ever working again.
I'm curious for any of the D&S guys that may be on here, what was 493 like after arriving in Durango? Anything crazy/out of the ordinary that had to be redone?
