The morning of August 2nd was spent driving to Chama. After having lunch in Chama I drove east to Los Pinos and
chased the west bound train back in to Chama. On August 3 I was walking around the yard before boarding my train
when to my surprise I ran into Earl. We had both worked at Roaring Camp some years before recognized one another
almost immediately. Earl made an offer I couldn't turn down - a ride in the cab to the top of the pass.
Our locomotive that day was the 489.
Unfortunately, my only shot of Earl running the engine didn't turn out well. I had hoped to use this photo as a subject for a
drawing but it was too blurry.
Half way up the grade Earl traded places with the fireman. Earl had introduced us but I regret that 30 years later I can't recall
the guy's name.
