I've re-read all of the responses in this thread and I don't believe anyone in this thread is complaining....at least not so far. I think we're all just recognizing that the two railroads have different business models, so folks need to adjust their expectations accordingly. I personally probably visit Chama more than Durango, only because the railroad there tends to offer the product that I am seeking as a consumer.
In my personal view, the D&S Winter Photo Train is the best opportunity for folks wanting to photograph that line. Unlike the fall trips, that event usually runs all by itself, with no competing trains on the line. The combination of lower schedule pressure, and possible winter snow conditions can make for some spectacular photos, as your images show.
Honestly, most of the complaints that I hear are from anonymous people on message boards, and non-participant charter-chasers, vs. the folks who actually pony up the cash to make the specials happen.
