Some of the specials on the D&S must have made a profit! I attended for the September 2011 photo trains which included the green cars but they were sold out several weeks in advance and the railway was only able to sell me a one-way ticket northbound with return on the service train. How this would have worked out is open to doubt as the photo train left all its passengers at the bridge south of Silverton which features in one of Jerry’s photos and collected them after turning at Silverton. Happily on the day there was one seat available on the southbound train and Yvonne, helpful as ever, secured it for me. There were still no places available on the Sunday mixed train and I contended myself with a lineside shot of it approaching Rockwood just after sunrise. It was a brilliant weekend with perfect weather and was preceded by 2 days of photo trains arranged by Pete Lerro on the C&TS. Tickets to ride on this were readily available when I booked though I think they were sold out later.
Maybe Mr Harper will have a change of heart one day! I do hope so.
You’re lucky to live close to the Pichi Richi line, Wayne. It’s a superbly scenic railway. I believe the photo trains there have been arranged by Jeremy Browne who must have worked very hard on them. I hope to get to take part one day but it’s a 24 hour flight from here in the U.K.!
