The Durango & Silverton has done historic photo trains in the past as part of Raillfest or as private charters.
The railfan community did not support these trains and they were always a loss for the D&S which is not a non-profit. Same problem the C&TS and Friends have, railfans were chasing but only a few bought tickets to ride. The D&S has lettered engines D&RGW, even painted a number of cars in Pullman Green with D&RGW lettering. The railfan community did not send a single word of thanks, complained about the paint color even though the D&S had left over D&RGW Pullman Green paint that they used to make new paint. People complained about the snow plow pilot on 478 even though the D&RGW had scrapped all the K-28 snow plow pilots years before and the only one available was from 493.
For the past two years, the D&S arranged to have RGS Goose 5 from Dolores run for the winter photo trains. This was the first time an RGS Goose had run in winter since 1951.
You cannot expect a for profit organization to do events that are not supported by railfans,
