As much as we emotionally want to see 483 in operation we need to keep a firm grip on reality. Reality insists that for there to be an operating railroad at all, the C&TS must become self-sufficient. While we want 483 to be put back in operating condition, consider what the priorities are. Even if the funding were to become available, who does the work? The shops have their hands full just keeping up with the current work load both from a qualified labor stand point and shop space. I’m positive that any decision about which engine to “wake” should the need arise, will based on the practical (if management is given a choice
). The C&TS needs to be operated using sound business practices and right now a 483 rebuild wouldn’t qualify. Those who would seek to move forward with this idea should consider the cost of having her rebuilt by a competent 3rd party.
