I'm curious of something? Has anyone in this thread actually volunteered to work on 483?
I did work on 483 a few years ago during a Friend's work session. Needle scaling an out of service locomotive is a filthy job!
There are major parts missing however they are on the property. Compared to where the poor thing was at 6-7 years ago, it's looking a lot better. The entire boiler shell was then given a protective coating to prevent deterioration.
From what the current shop guys said, a rebuild would involve remove and replace interior boiler sheets. A crane would be needed to take the boiler off to accomplish. There's plenty of know how among the Friends to rebuild it however there isn't enough volunteers. Grants from historic groups could likely be obtained to purchase the materials.
There are 4 K36 already running that run the tourist operation.168 is a special project that's adding a missing level of history on either the C&T or D&S. A big kudos to John Bush for the vision of making sure this piece of history is not only preserved but soon operational. 463 was paid for by donations and the Friends. How about a group similar to the 315 guys for 483? The reality is the nixed swap was the best way to get 483 running. In fact, it likely would have been in operation already.
