This may be far-fetched, but if this is a flag pole what might be it’s purpose?— Maybe a primitive signaling device to notify trains coming off the La Madera Branch when it was safe to enter the “main” and proceed to the depot. The Branch entered the main south and around the curve where the wye was located. Thus an incoming La Madera train could not see the train order board on the front of the depot nor what might be approaching the depot, but likely could see a flag on the flagpole. Remember, this is before radios and there were no signals on the line. Yes, I know the La Madera Branch was gone by 1931, but maybe they hadn’t gotten to taking down the flagpole. That’s my theory for what it’s worth...
