That pole has always puzzled me, but now that we are talking about it, I took a closer look at the photos.

The electric (or telegraph?) wires ran down the west side of the tracks and the depot was on the east side. It looks like two wires ran over the yard:

But the skinny top half of the pole... was it a lightening rod maybe?
