Just an aside in this discussion, the southern end of the Rio Grande standard gauge was Trinidad. Even though the railroad lost the race to Raton Pass it still had a vibrant freight business, with a lot of coal, shipped from the Trinidad area. Even in the late 20th Century the railroad ran a unit coal train to Jansen where it connected with the Colorado & Wyoming. The railroad had its own line south of Walsenburg until the 1930s.
