Standard gauging the valley line from Alamosa to Poncha Pass would have been no problem. But from Poncha Springs up the narrow canyon to Poncha Pass would have presented very very significant issues. The canyon is steep and narrow. Try driving US 285 south from Poncha Springs. Most of the NG grade and even some bridges are still there. Standard gauge in that canyon would have been impractical in my opinion.
