Rounding Phantom Curve.
At Osier we picked up car 401, the Osier Souvenir shop car, and continued on, crossing the fill just west of Osier.
A rather violent snow-thunder squawl moved in as we approached Cascade Creek. Just as I tripped the shutter, a bolt of lightning hit on the mountainside above us. You can imagine what was going through all our heads at that point…… Well, we’re still moving…..horizontally…..that’s good.
Around the loop at Los Pinos.
We arrived at Cumbres at sunset. We picked up the 12 cars for braking, performed an air test, put the retainers up and cautiously picked our way down the hill. Here George oils around 489 before starting home. It was a long, hard day. 495 came through the ordeal quite well. We rolled into Chama at 900pm. We left the train on the mainline in the yard, turned 489 on the wye and tied up at 1000pm, a long 13 ½ hour day. This was the longest trip 495 had made since being retired in the early 1960’s. She came down to Antonito in September of 1970, and had been in Antonito ever since.
We did some switching the next day, but all us operating crews were laid off for the winter at the end of the week.
