The next morning George Knauff came over with Shop Foreman Doug Stamps. Both of them were on the crew going back with the 495. George and Russ ran 489, Gary was conductor, I was brakeman, and Doug kept 495 happy. We had caboose 05635 to ride in. Here our train awaits the brakeman to get on board after he gets this picture taken.
Our first stop was just beyond Furgeson’s Trestle at MP 286 to check around 495 to make sure she wasn’t going to run hot. Everything seemed OK so it was off to Big Horn.
The weather started moving in by the time we got to Big Horn. Here Gary is giving me the eagle eye while Russ shows me foil-covered leftover pizza he warmed up on 489’s backhead. Lunch time!!
A brief stop for water and inspection at Sublette. Note my water bag hanging on the railing.
Time Table Special Instructions require us to have at least 100 feet of lightly loaded equipment between locomotives when crossing Cascade Creek and Lobato Trestles. At Toltec siding there were 3 6500-class flats long with wood flat 6314. They had been there all summer. We left them there back in May with the first train across the railroad (they were loaded with bagged cement). The 3 big steel flats were placed between 489 and 495, the 6314 was placed between 495 and 05635. Now we were in good shape to cross the trestles.
