Tools, journal jacks and an assortment of different sized brasses were carried in the lockers under the benches on the caboose. Journal packing and oil were carried in containers stored in lockers under the cupola.

Yessir, back in the "good old days" one of the things you had to learn in order to be promoted to conductor or engineer was how your equipment worked, how to maintain it, and how to fix it if it failed on the road. If you couldn't repair it, you had to know how to limp it home to where it could be fixed.

There was no "power desk" to call to get assistance......

On the narrow gauge in later years, once you left Antonito, you were on your own until you got to Chama.
