I love that shot at Oxford, showing the deep sag they are pulling out of. There was a 1.42% grade down into Oxford, followed by a 1.42% climb out of the little valley. 497 is probably wide open, hooked up nice and high and making a hard run at the hill. The fireman is on the deck, the dark exhaust over head is the evidence of a scoop of coal put in the "right spot". The clear exhaust at the stack shows the fireman probably mid-swing on the next scoop. The firedoor is open letting extra air in the fire, clearing the smoke temporarily, as then next scoop of coal goes in. My guess is in another few seconds another volcanic blast of black smoke will come from 497's stack as they thunder up the hill.
I bet it sounded great...
