The D&RG utilized a similar situation at Taos Jctn. on the Santa Fe branch.

A logging branchline split off the main just south of the depot. The main went downhill and the branch started out up hill. They were connected into a Wye. At the uphill end of the wye, the railroad located a cistern. A pipeline followed the wye downhill to the main where they located a standpipe. The downgrade trains would bring along a water car and spot it by the cistern. Once empty the uphill train could take the car back to nearest water or all the way to Antonito, if needed. Gravity did much of the work.

The cistern can still be found , while the standpipe was removed and reportedly placed at Sublette.

Enjoy.
