Not that it's particularly relevant, Chris -
But I have actually hiked a portion of the old Colorado Springs & Cripple Creek District RR with Colorado College professor Bob Orms on a beautiful autumn day nearly 55 years ago. He and Ed's dad 'Doc' Stabler were among the favorites of us young whippersnappers back in them 'Good Old Days'. Most of the CS&CCD was converted to a well-graded dirt and gravel road many, many years ago, but there were a couple of places where the 'Gold Camp Road' took shortcuts across some big loops and s-curves and the original right-of-way was still in evidence - at least in the early nineteen-sixties.
