Jonathan,
This is what the guys were trying to explain about the railroad situation from Bath to BV. The Colorado Midland crossed over the DSP&P at Bath and then continued to hug along the hillside to Newett along the Trout Creek Valley, once passing Newett the CM then obligated to follow the hillside above Trout Creek and came above BV and the Arkansas Valley. The CM never physically went through BV but had a small station on the hillside above town to the east. The DSP&P on the other hand followed next to the CM ROW from Bath to Newett but instead of taking the hillside route as the CM it plunged into the Trout Creek valley to end up on the Arkansas valley floor. There were 3 separate variations in trackage from the mouth of Trout Creek to BV, D&RG, and Nathrop over the years. I do not know what year the route Dave traced off the top of my head.
Here is a link to a map that shows the two separate routes of the CM and DSP&P. The map rights belong to Dave Dye.

Hope that helps
We have witnessed valley
and plain and crest,
Canon and pass we've scanned;
We have seen the best
of the glorious West,
by the trail of the Rio Grande
