Since I live in Chama, I will briefly comment. Many people from outside of the area likely think that the Chama airstrip referenced here is frequented by slow flying Cessna aircraft or the like. One of the regular users of the airstrip, however, is a single engine turboprop with pretty fast landing and takeoff speeds. Personally, I wouldn't want to fly in and out of that airstrip in that aircraft, but it flies in and out frequently. It ain't any slow crop dusting plane. Also, Air Force C-130 transports regularly do low altitude training in both the Rio de Los Pinos and Rio Chama valleys. A few days ago I saw one of the C-130's clear the hill just east of the Cumbres Section House by less than 200' above the ground--close enough that I could see the crew in the cockpit. Thursday seems a popular day for such flights, sometimes with a C-130 coming over Chama at near ground level at about 10 o'clock at night--that will get one's attention.
