I have spent a lot of time around WW2 aircraft in the past and have flown in several.
Here I am in a P-51, right before going up in formation with a B-17 and a B-24!
And to the far right in this shot:
I've seen B-17s started in almost any engine order you can. I do think I have read that starting #3 first was common during the war, though. I have a few B-17 manuals, I'll break them out to see what the official sequence was.
