Doug. Typically engines were numbered left to right. So the outboard left engine would be 1, inboard in left would be 2, and so on.

I'm not sure about the generators, but a lot of the bombers would only startup the outboard engines for taxiing. Once near the takeoff, they would spin up 2 and 3.
