The pre-2013 Escapes came both 2WD and AWD, and the latter has fairly good ground clearance - but remember the AWD is NOT a 4WD.
And don't be stupid like me and take your eye off the road - even in flat country like on top of the mesa above The Whiplash . . .
Ford changed the Escape significantly beginning with the 2013 models, IIRC, and IMHO totally ruined the design.
My 2007 AWD Hybrid is far and away the best car I've ever owned, but I won't even consider one of the newer models.
