The 771 was inspected years ago by ASTA and was pretty much a "jack up the whistle and roll a new boiler underneath" kind of thing. She was worn out and she had been used as a switch engine in Victoria in her last days.
The "mechanic" from Grapevine could not get the now rusted brake rigging loosened in the conventional way, so he put the gas axe to it and destroyed it. No telling how much other damage was done preparing the engine to move.
Earl is so right about that VERY sharp curve coming into the Stockyards. Nothing bigger than the aforementioned Mogul could get in there without going on the ground. From what I was told, those coaches lost their six axle trucks in favor of four axle trucks because of that very curve...
