We had a bear incident at Sublette Heights many years ago during a Friends work session in the middle of the night. I wasn't there that time so I don't know the exact details. One reason the Square Nail Gang moved their headquarters to Mogote. From what I heard, no food was in the tent.
Many many years ago, I visited the Philmont Scout Ranch which is probably about 100 miles east of the C&TS. At the time we had intense awareness of bears, with stories of campers being attacked and warnings to keep everything that they might be after, even toothpaste, out of the tents. It worked, in the two weeks our group was there, we didn't have any problems!
We even get them in Ft Collins. My wife has been told to remove the bird feeders during the fall.
