I suspect the D&S used bears as an excuse. Anyone who has been to almost any remote location in the American west (try Yosemite, Glacier park, and a whole bunch of other popular destinations) know that bears are a manageable problem, including isolated camping. Ok, grizzlies are more challenging than black bears, but I doubt there are grizzlies around the C&TS. I would guess human vandalism of any fixed facility would be the bigger risk, which is why I suggested using railcars that can be moved out of harms way when not occupied. I was thinking in terms of turning some of the ex-DRGW MOW cars into revenue equipment, which would help support their restoration. A bunk car and a cook car would make a much more comfortable accommodation that the D&S Railcamp box car, at least in my mind. And they could be restored in a historical manner I would think. And maybe Michael's portable switch idea would facilitate some new and more attractive setout locations.
Oh well, the railroad probably has bigger fish to fry but sometimes it is fun to dream.
