To all of those Armchair Master Mechanics.
I think Charlie has said it best.
I think that before any of you judge and say what is the correct way for the shop work.
I would recommend that you go and donate time at your local steam railroad operation, and learn about what it takes i time, money, locomotive knowledge, and patience.
I would have to say start out cleaning the time hardened grease and dirt off of the side rods with a putty knife so that they can be steam cleaned, help roll the tubes in by helping oil the tube and ferrule,or climb into the boiler by bending around the throttle/dry pipe in the steam dome to work on the inside of the boiler, and get a bath when you wash the boiler down.
Having done a little bit of the unknown SHOPMAN'S WORK then you can say what you may with experience to back it up.
