Thanks Andrew for the kind remarks about the NEVADA cENTRAL book and to Bruce for the 1946 Kneiss piece on Union Iron Works. While doing research for the NC book, I found several articles in the Battle Mountain newspapers describing the arival of the Battle Mountain & Lewis "John D. Hall" (c/n 23)that confirmed the engine arrived on July 25, 1881 as a 2-4-0T. She was not able to haul herself, let alone any cars up the 7.5 percent grade to the Starr Grove Mine. She was returned to Prescott Scott & Co. and a second locomotive was ordered (c/n 27-1881).
The "John D. Hall" was rebuilt as an 0-6-0T and believed to have been resold as c/n 21-1881 to R.D. Chandler & Co.In short, it appears that PS&C c/n 23 and 21 were the same locomotive.
The second BM&L loco, an 0-6-0T named "Starr Grove" (c/n 27-1881) was never delivered and was sold to the American & Pacific Transportation Co. in Guatemala in 1884. (plans used in book, p. 63)
Photo of the original BM&L loco, rebuilt as an 0-6-0T (in Canada), was reported by D.S. Richter. However, the framed photo was in the attic of Doug's garage and the ladder to the attic was too steep for Doug to climb. A friend did go to the attic, but the picture was not found. Perhaps someday it will turn-up.
