John,
I remember that 497.....thing. That was an attempted copy of an ATSF six note that the 481 had throughout much of the eighties. Charlie Bradshaw preferred the "larger" sounding whistles. The one on 497 was a rough casting that needed some more work to sound a little better. It had loose casting plugs (is that what they're called?) that rattled around and very thick unfinished edges on the chimes. The main thing I recall was that it gargled. Yea!, that's it, it was...... gargly.
