Mark,
You know, I had a wonderful trip to narrow gauge country in 1980, after a few days out there I really wasn't upset with the whistle that much.
As time goes by (you younger members of the board listen up!) one finds that some of the real treats around the narrow gauge are to happen by when some odd thing happens like a homemade whistle being put on the engine!
It's also nice to "meet" folks like yourself who can fill out the story some. I like to groove to the square and not-so-square exhaust of our mechanical friends, but the stories really add texture to the experience.
So, I hope that someone DOES send you some coal smoke and that you happen by here again.
Perhaps when I'm not stacked up with tasks waiting for immediate attention I can listen to more of that 1980 trip.
The nice folks in the ticket office made sure that I had the first coach behind 488 all to myself up the hill, and I got some nice recordings of it.
Now to borrow a good cassette player so I can transfer them to DAT...
Thanks again for filling in some of the background of my rare recordings!
Les
