I seriously doubt that. If it had happened in 1951, somebody would have heard about it or seen it.
There is written evidence that the D&RGW had no interest in buying any of the RGS. This was during the Perlman era. The idea of buying anything that would increase business is fantasy.
In order to run a K28 on the north part of the RGS it would have had to come from the Durango end. There was a lot of 45lb rail on the south end and the line from Dolores to Rico was 40 lb. The RGs was reluctant to run mudhens between Dolores and Rico.
