Hi,
I played a board game called Luftwaffe (I think Avalon Hill) in the 1970s. I learned though play and then found out later in WWII documentation several interesting items:
1) the P38 had the approximate range of the P51
2) the P38 was not as good as the BF109 but was a match for the JU88
3) deep bombing raids into the Axis (including Polish and eastern European manufacturing sites) did not become feasible until the P51 became available in sufficient numbers. (using wing tanks).
4) the ME 262 vastly outclassed the P51. If the German General staff had not clandestinely pushed development of the ME262, none of the Axis jets would have been operational. Hitler's position was that the BF109 and BF190 won in 1939 and 1940 - why do we need better? (The P51 was a bad surprise - better than the BF109 and about the same as the BF190).
Another item of interest that I always found funny was the P47 "Jug." Separated by a common language, the British though the Jug was short for juggernaut. The USAAF thought the plane looked like a milk jug.
