Hi, all -
Last night TCM showed
"Duel in the Sun", in which Gregory Peck played a villain, so it must
have been fairly early in his career. A small part of the story involved a railroad 'trespassing'
on his father's ranch - supposedly in Texas - but the brief scenes involving an old and rather
ornate 4-4-0 appear to have been filmed on the Sierra Railroad (which I understand will be
the subject of an entire volume of the 'Hollywood's Railroads' series).
The above was followed by Buster Keaton's first full-length feature,
"Our Hospitality", which according to the TCM host was filmed in part due to Mr. Keaton's love of old-time trains. The locomotive appeared to be a replica of Stephenson's 'Rocket', and the track appeared to be a sneak preview of the narrow gauge over Cumbres Pass circa late Spring, 1970,* although obviously filmed much earlier and apparently in Oregon or northern California - which I'm sure we'll find out eventually (right, Larry?)
