Everett, certainly not to say it doesn't help at 180 psi but 200 seems to'
be a bottom "sweet" spot. Some of it is pure physics, the rest mechanical
ie water use, cutoff, etc. When you consider cylinder thrust you look at
average pressure determined by cutoff and the expansion during the entry
to cutoff period. A soak engine loses that average quicker due to loss in
steam temperature ie reduced expansion. That requires a longer period
before cutoff ie requires more evaporated water. It's possible to slightly
downsize cylinder size on a heated engine because of the enhanced expansion which further reduces water use. A soak engine is easier to
rebuild, a bit easier to maintain but you pay the price on the operating
end. It's all fine points until you get up to the point where a soak
engine just isn't practical.
