I was paraphrasing from what Cafky and others have written, based on interviews with old Midland hands. The consensus seems to have been that the 159s were over cylindered as simple engines.
I understand the math and the logic behind what was done, and that it should have worked properly. After all the D&RG did the same thing with not only the K-27s, but at least one class of both 2-8-0s, and 4-6-0s which were rebuilt from vauclain compounds, and apparently it worked fine and properly for them.
It is an accepted belief that the 159s were basically unsuccessful as simple engines, (for what ever reason), but that the 202 (425) did turn out to be the best of them, again as a result of superheat and the piston valve conversion.
